The Artist - Don Vaughan (born 1916, died 2005): A British artist who grew up in West London (Chiswick). His works were mostly in watercolours in the early days, then guache and eventually oils. After graduating from the Chiswick Polytechnic School of Art, he worked as a furniture designer for one of Londons top furniture companies. He left to join a commercial art studio, then joined the RAF in 1939 and served in both Egypt and South Africa during the 2nd World War. He even managed to organise successful exhibitions of his art in Cairo and Cape Town respectively. Following the war he returned to England and in 1951 started work as a freelance artist. He painted English country landscapes mostly around Surrey where he lived with his family. However he also painted ornithological and railway paintings. Nostalgic in nature his themes mostly reflect a feeling of tranquility and the simpler life of past times, including the use of horse drawn ploughs and gathering in the harvest (as in this painting). He exhibited in numerous galleries across the UK including London''s West End.
