A fine two handed ceremonial Fijian Islands gunstock war club Kiakavo or Gatawaka, carved hardwood, inlaid with white glass beads, good patinated surface, 19th Century.
In good sound condition, typical fine splits, evidence of large boring insect attack and other losses, now filled with lead and other fillers.
Length 36,1/2'' or 930mm, shaft diameter 2'' or 50mm, weight 1874 grams.
Spurred clubs like this one have often been referred to as ‘gunstock clubs’ because of their resemblance to muskets, however they were in use in Fiji prior to the introduction of firearms.
The underside of the head was pounded into shape in the growing tree with stones before the club was cut.
A handsome old example of early traditional Fijian Weaponry
