A rare and large Chinese burr wood carved sculpture of a female Lion Dog or Foo Dog with 2 young. The sculpture formed from a large single piece of burr wood with the body and mane of all 3 lion dogs formed from the natural burr in the timber. The carved faces with painted eyes and the mother bearing bone teeth. To the reverse are lines of Chinese characters part of which translates as the 4th year of Guanxu (1879). In Chinese culture the Lion dogs of Foo Dogs symbolize prosperity, success and guardianship and can often be seen guarding important temples and buildings. Dimensions:- Height…41''''/ 104cm.
