A rare New Hall bone china porcelain sauce tureen and cover, navette shape on a pedestal foot with integrated stand. The bowl has spurred side handles and the cover has a similar shaped handle of asymmetric form. All surfaces have a continuous moulded floral pattern, the outlines of which are carefully and profusely gilded. A shallow band to the belly of the tureen and the centre of the cover are reserved from the moulding and are instead very well painted with garden flowers in bright enamels of poppy red, pink, puce, a pale grey-blue, cream, yellow and an olivey green. Unmarked, c.1820-1830.
New Hall produced very few dessert services and all of their dessert wares are uncommon. These tureens would not have been included with all services and are seldom found. Reference: New Hall, Holgate, an identical tureen with different decoration is illustrated in colour plate S and discussed on page 103.
It measures 18.5cm (7 1/4'') wide by 11.5cm (4 1/2'') deep and 14cm (5 1/2'') high to the knop.
In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and minor handling wear, just a bit of rubbing to the gilt on the handles and the rim of the tureen and foot rim. The join between the bowl and the foot is a little crude with a fine line of patchy missing glaze, but all original to manufacture and there is a small glaze fault inside the base of the bowl.
