Mid-Victorian Aesthetic Period Amboyna & Ebonised Card Table
A fine example of an Aesthetic Period card table from around 1860-80 and in good condition, ebonised throughout with amboyna* veneered panels and ormolu highlights, with a rectangular top that has rounded corners & ends, canted amboyna veneered edges, ebonised frame with incised stringing and stylised aesthetic motifs and a quarter-cut central burrwood veneered panel, over a matching frieze, swivelling to reveal a mahogany-lined shallow storage compartment and folding out to present a red baize covered playing surface with tooled leather trim, on two pairs of ormolu applied inverse-tapering supports, ring-moulded and enlivened by gilt-painted fluting, united by a conforming stretcher between oval bosses, topped in each case by a ring-turned finial, on outward curved legs and cubic feet on brass & brown ceramic casters, this exceptional piece will impress in the most elegant of homes, richly-deserving of the admiring attention that it will undoubtedly attract.
*Amboyna is technically not a distinct timber, but is the name of the burrwood from any of the ''Pterocarpus'' species; it is still among the most expensive and sought-after of all burrwoods
