Edwin Masters, Village Scene With Cottages - Antique Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brave Fine Art

This charming oil painting by British artist Edwin Masters (act. 1862-1871) depicts a busy village scene with several thatched cottages and figures. It’s abundant with life and each character seems to tell their own story.

The scene is centred around an old country track that winds its way through the village. It seems to be a popular route as several horseback riders are resting while an old cart clatters around the corner. It’s an idealised look back into a time gone by. A romantic notion of yesteryear.

The style and subject of the painting are reminiscent of some 17th-century Dutch landscape paintings. During this period, the Dutch middle classes looked to buy works they could relate to. Local scenes depicting everyday rural life.

The artist, Edwin Masters, is an intriguing one and we’ve provided some background information in our directory.
