Rare 19th Century wood carving of a Burmese Nat (celestial being or spirit figure), depicting a male human figure with head thrust forward and wearing a demon mask headdress mounted with antlers. The figure painted in polychrome pigments and with a mounting plaque for suspension on a wall.
Unusual and strong visual piece. Charming character, and lovely aged colour and texture.
The Burmese spirit world has thirty-seven nats or spirits. Most of these are spirits of those who have died a violent death. Shrines are built for them and offerings made.
Condition: Good condition with little wear, natural age cracks, few nail holes, small chips, minor losses, worm damage, old repairs, and encrustations to the metal plates.
Provenance: Estate of Wolfgang Zacke (1942-2022), co-founder of Galerie Zacke, thence by descent.
