Ernest Walbourn 1872-1927 Large Oil Painting Busy Market Scene Brittany France
‘A Market Scene in Brittany, France’
A beautifully painted scene with fine attention to detail and good strong colour, showing a busy market with an abundance of stalls and traders selling their wares. Many of the women are in traditional dress and are wearing white bonnets, one woman in particular acts as a focal point for this painting, as often the case with works by Ernest Walbourn.
Oil Painting on canvas, protected behind glass, presented within its original attractive gilt gesso frame. Signed lower right Ernest Walbourn, with title plaque lower centre reading ‘A Market Place Brittany E Walbourn’
It is quite unusual to find a French market scene by Walbourn.
Provenance - I have had this painting for around 45 years having purchased it directly from a member of the Battersby family, famous for the manufacture of hats.
Condition - The gilt gesso frame which bears a few losses but doesn’t detract from the overall beauty. This painting has been preserved behind glass and has never been relined.
