Lovely Brigg gadget pencil bamboo and hallmarked silver walking stick or cane.
Often called a bookmakers cane as they always had a pencil on hand to record the bets with.
Hoop top where the wood has been steamed and bent to make the handle. It has a root ball feature to the end of the handle.
The pencil sits into the side and is held in a silver case. Extremely unusual to find the original pencil and holder with the hallmarks and makers marks matching the cane exactly as this one does.
The silver collar on the cane was assayed London in as shown in the pictures, date letter for 1915.
The makers mark is for Charles Cooke for the retailer Brigg of London is also stamped into it. Brigg are now part of the Swaine Adeney Brigg Group who are well known for their top quality merchandise at 339 Oxford Street, London.
The silver collar and pencil case are both fully marked.
It measures 90 cm 35 1/2 inches in length, the handle is 14 cm 5 1/2 inches wide.
The pencil is 11 cm 5 1/2 inches long.
The ferrule is original and made of brass and steel.
It''s in excellent condition but with some signs of age and
use as you''d expect at this age.
Some surface marks and scratches to the silver as shown in the pictures.
Some minor splits in the surface of the partridge wood but these have been
professionally stabilised and are from age and wood movement not damage.
No damage or repairs to the silver or the shaft.
